Drybeck Farm Yurts and Gypsy Wagon, Armathwaite
OS Grid Reference NY514478
Luxuriate in the simple outdoor life staying in one of our exquisitely appointed yurts or our renovated gypsy wagon. We are in a little known but truly beautiful corner of Cumbria with our site on the banks of the idyllic River Eden. The experience we offer is truly about the natural environment, a sustainable approach to our smallholding and facilities, but with the simple comforts and opulence of a bygone age.
A 20 minute walk from the village of Armathwaite, which has a station on the world famous Carlisle-Settle Railway line, we are also convenient for the Lake District, Northern Pennines and Yorkshire Dales, Hadrian's Wall and the Borders, Carlisle and the Solway.
The local back lanes, bridle ways and footpaths are ideal for walking, horse riding and cycling without the traffic of better known tourist areas.
Or you can while away your time by the river reading, walking, watching the wildlife or making friends with our Gloucestershire Old Spot pigs, Dexter Cattle, horses and poultry. Failing that you could have a walk up the village for a drink in one of (or both) of the two pubs. For our more energetic guests a whole range of outdoor pursuits are available in the area.
We believe that Drybeck Farm offers a unique experience as an anti-dote to the daily hustle and bustle. If you are looking for peace and tranquillity yet plenty to interest you, should you choose, Drybeck Farm in the heart of the Eden Valley is the ideal choice.
The Yurts:
Our yurts are made in Cumbria from locally grown timber. Our smaller yurt is 18ft in diameter and sleeps 4 in a double and 2 single beds. If you wish extra bedding and mattresses can be provided for up to 2 more people. Our larger yurt is 21ft in diameter and sleeps 6 in comfort in a double and 4 single beds. If you wish extra bedding and mattresses can be provided for up to 2 more people.
We provide Egyptian cotton bed linen, down duvets and blankets. In keeping with the ambience of the yurts and our green credentials lighting is low key. We provide oil lamps and candle lanterns and wind up torches. In the yurt are facilities for making hot drinks and a wood burning stove. Near the yurts is our wooden cookhouse. This is split into two kitchens, one for each yurt, with a large canvas awning off the front of it which accommodates dining tables and chairs. Each kitchen has a wood burning oven, gas burners, sink with running water and is comprehensively equipped with porcelain crockery, cutlery cooking equipment wine glasses etc. You do not need to bring anything in this respect. Fridge storage is available in one of the farm outbuildings.
You can either cook for yourselves or share a meal with other guests. Each yurt has their own outside table and chairs and open fire place. Nearby are our eco-friendly compost toilets and showers, both of which are very effective, user friendly and have a minimal impact upon our environment. A selection of board games and books are available
Also on the site we have the farm larder from which you can buy our own produce including sausage, bacon, eggs, pork, fruit, vegetables, preserves and home baked bread and cakes as well as a small range of other basic foodstuffs.
Any body interested in the farm and livestock is welcome to help out at feeding time (under supervision of course).
