Newton Rigg Yurt Camp, nr Penrith

OS Grid Reference: NY488312

Yurt Village suitable for groups just outside Penrith at the corner of the Lake District

When not enjoying activities in the majestic surroundings of the Lake District, your enjoying a tented camp in rural countryside with views of the mountains, you will have opportunity to experience staying in the unique environment of the Yurt Village . The Yurts are based on the traditional nomadic circular tents from Mongolia , but are very modern and comfortable in style.

The Yurt Village is based at the Newton Rigg campus, of the University of Cumbria , near Penrith. Set within the grounds, the campus offers a welcome and relaxed feel for all visitors.  Excellent sport facilities including all weather and flood lit astro turf sports fields; grass pitches; tennis courts; an indoor sports hall and fitness suite; a Climbing Wall and High Ropes Adventure course and over 100 hectares of English countryside within the bounds of the estate (access to these facilities can be arranged but will incur additional cost). Also sited within the heart of the campus is Brambles restaurant and the Gin Case Bar (seasonal provision based on academic year).

Each yurt can house up to eight campers, a total of sixteen for the site, with each yurt containing its own wood burning stove if additional heat is required, though every yurt is fully insulated and weatherproof. Bedding is available at £5 per person.

The Yurt village provides a community feel for groups with a central larger Yurt providing a meeting, eating and informal space for activities. This is adjoined by a purpose built kitchen suitable for communal cooking.

The shower and toilet facilities are a short walk away, with additional larger shower facilities available for large groups on request. Some groups have requested a portaloo on the site, this can be done by prior arrangement at an additional small fee.

For cyclists the coast to coast "C2C" runs right through the campus.
