What is a yurt?
It does look great, but what is it? Well it's a rather well built, portable, canvas and fleece lined, wood lattice-framed structure traditionally used by nomads in the steppes of Central Asia. They provide accommodation much in the way of a tent yet a yurt is more home-like in shape and build, with thicker walls than that of a tent They are a modest size of 14ft to 16ft with good headroom all the way around. The Yurt is designed with comfort and weather resistance in mind, the crown cover is removable during hot days to get nice air circulation, but when its chilly there are fleece linings on the walls and a lovely wood burner to keep you toasty. The double door is lockable from inside and out so that there is a lot more security than that of a tent.

About the campsite...
For really getting back to nature come to the beautiful Grizedale campsite situated in the heart of Grizedale valley which lies between Coniston Water and Lake Windermere. The village of Hawkshead lies north of Grizedale and it is a mere 5 miles further to Ambleside. South lies the local market town of Ulverston. The yurts are situated in the woodlands overlooking the farm and the forest and they are away from the main campsite.
Grizedale campsite has lovely new facilities, male and female showers, toilets and a washing up area complete with drinks machine. Dogs are more than welcome in the yurts and on site as long as they are kept on a lead as it is still a working farm. There are plenty of animals around that you can pet, and hopefully horse riding will be starting soon. Walks and cycle paths adjoin the campsite, there is a local pub which serves homemade food, and shopping is available in Hawkshead. Cycle hire is available at the visitor centre.
