North American Indian Tipis in the Lake District

4 Winds Lakeland Tipis are situated at Low Wray National Trust Campsite, close to Ambleside and to the North of Lake Windermere, within view of the historic and magnificent Low Wray Castle.

Watch the sun rise over England’s largest lake and enjoy the magnificent views across the water to Wansfell Pike and The Fairfield Horseshoe. Situated on the western shore of Windermere, Low Wray is the perfect base for a whole range of outdoor activities. There are opportunities for gentle walks and great off-road biking from the campsite. The quiet country lanes will also prove attractive to cycle tourers. Low Wray is an ideal base for lovers of watersports including windsurfers, canoeists and dinghy sailors, with on-site access for launching. Please note however that there is no access for powered craft.

At 4 Winds Lake District Tipis we try to recreate the feel of a traditional American Indian tipi. We have colourful rugs and mats on the floor, attractive candle lanterns which at night cast a soft magical glow of patterns on the canvas. We provide a low level table and bench set that you can use inside and a table and bench set outside.

There are a variety of books and magazines to read and games for the children. We provide each tipi with a book about Native American Indian culture for you to read during your stay.

Our tipis are entirely hand-made by Wolf Glen Tipis in Scotland they make top quality authentic tipis (see Links page on our website). Covers and linings are made from heavy-duty, 12oz coated cotton tenting canvas. The poles are cut from local sustainably managed plantations, using timbers such as Norway spruce, Sitka spruce and Scots pine when available. The poles are selected, stripped and sanded to a smooth finish. The tipis are erected following the traditional Sioux 3-pole construction. The construction of the tipi and lining means that tipis are cosy and warm in winter and offer a cool shade in the summer. Providing the perfect Lake District camping experience.

Our tipis come fully equipped to make your tipi stay as simple and comfortable as possible.

We now have 12 tipis on Low Wray Campsite and the National Trust have upgraded their toilet and shower blocks the children’s play area and the reception and shop.

Fully Equipped tipis contain:

  • Carpet and rugs, cushions, blanket, candle lanterns
  • Plates, dishes cups and cutlery for 2/4/6 people
  • 2 x sharp knives, tin opener, corkscrew, chopping boards, 1 x colander, 1 x bowl, plastic wine glasses,  plastic tumblers, potato peeler, wooden spoon
  • Gas cooker and shelving, pans, kettle and kitchen utensils, ice box
  • Indoor low level table and bench set and out door table and bench set

The tipis are fully weather proofed, they have an internal liner, groundsheet, carpet and decorative rugs. They also have a rain catcher attached to the poles at the top of the tipi if it should rain the rain flows down the poles then collects in the rain catcher and is drained off at the back of the lining.
The designs on the tipis come from Native North American Indian symbols usually of animals, dream sequences or to show the status of the owner. Sizes refer to the typical diameter of the floor space.
